Park plans trout fishing, star party

The public is invited to visit Fort Griffin State Historical Site this Saturday, Jan. 25, for two separate and very different special events.
The park will host its second trout fishing day of the winter, with a Fort Griffin staff member available on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide instruction and assistance.
“As part of an annual rainbow trout stocking program conducted by Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), we will be stocking our fishing pond multiple times with rainbow trout this winter,” said program specialist Eric Abercrombie. “In an effort to help the public take advantage of this great fishing opportunity, we will be hosting a trout fishing day on Saturday, Jan. 25.”
The recommended fishing bait for the trout is canned corn placed on a very small hook.
“We found that the best location for catching the trout has been in the deeper portions of the pond, which is mostly near the dam,” said Abercrombie. “Bring some sinkers, small hooks, rod and reel, and a can of corn and you will be all set.”
Star Gazing
With a much earlier sunset than during warm weather star gazing events, the staff at Fort Griffin State Historic Site will host its annual Winter Star Party Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.
The program will be held in the astronomy area behind the visitor center, which is on the west side of Hwy. 283 near the fort.
“Dress warm,” Abercrombie suggested, “as this will mostly likely be our coldest event of the year.”
Amateur astronomers share their knowledge of the night skies and also allow guests to use their telescopes and other astronomy equipment.
The price for either event is regular admission to the park – $4 for adults, seniors and students $3.
