The Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association met twice during April to begin making plans for next year’s county livestock show.

The first meeting was the regularly scheduled annual meeting held on April 9 to elect directors, elect officers, and listen to any concerns or issues from the public about the 2019 county show.

The additional directors meeting was held the following week on April 16 to allow the directors time to confirm that judges would be available for the proposed new show schedule.

Directors & Officers

Two of the eight directors are up for vote every year.

Garry Edgar and Mike Folsom remained on the board and will each serve another four-year term.

Others are Rocky Vinson, Mike Parsons, J.W. Askew, Cody Leech, John Caldwell, and Jim Owen.

Three officers were re-elected to their current positions, with one new officer selected.

Bronco Askew continues to serves as president.

Austin Sherwood remains vice president and Molly Cauble as treasurer.

Tisha Wilkins is the new secretary.

Show Superintendents

Show superintendents for 2020 are all familiar faces, though a couple have moved into new positions.

Sherwood will return as 2020 show superintendent.

Matt Duke will replace Lesley Jones as barn superintendent. Mike Parsons and Kalico Leech continue to head sales.

Rocky Vinson is replacing Kelly Head as showmanship superintendent.

Debra Boyett is still in charge of concessions.

Chris Beard heads the rifle and the processed hog raffles, while Molly Cauble and Mike Parsons are in charge of buckles.

J.W. Askew and Bucky Nail will head up the cattle division, and Trent Tankersley, Jearl Boyett, Leech, and Sherwood will supervise the swine.

Morgan Smith and James Rodriguez are in charge of sheep and goats.

Chickens and rabbits are under the direction of Leslie Belcher and Shayna Duke.

Rule Changes

Amendments to the rules were suggested, and changes adopted for next year include changing the show dates to fall one weekend earlier and moving the rabbit and chicken show from Thursday to Saturday.

“We changed the dates to put a little time between our county show and the Fort Worth stock show,” said the board president. “We are hoping to give the animals and people a little more chance to recover from the stress of the show.”

The 2020 show will be begin with weigh-ins of some animals taking place on Thursday, Jan. 24, but the actual judging will not start until Friday, Jan. 25.

Swine will enter the ring on Friday, Jan. 25, followed by goats and sheep.

“We will have a new class for Dorper sheep,” said Bronco Askew. “Of course, just like always, there must be at least five animals entered to have a separate class for any breed.”

Cattle will be shown on Saturday, Jan. 26, followed by the rabbits and chickens.

Like the 2019 show, there will not be a barbecue meal. Instead attendees are encouraged to patronize the concession stand.

Volunteers

In addition to the superintendents and officers, volunteers have signed up to cover other needs of the show.

Dena Denton will help with stock show pictures.

Bid numbers will be under the supervision of Gayala Askew and Heather Snyder, and Kalico Leech is in charge of bidders’ books.

Mike Parsons, Garry Edgar, Cody Leech, and Chris Beard will oversee the pig sale.
