Funding given to build Graham Pavilion
Melba Graham had worked at Albany High School for 11 years before she and her husband Jim died in an automobile accident last June.
Now, due to fundraising efforts by her co-workers and students, and donations from many in the community, including the Albany High senior class, a memorial pavilion in honor of the Grahams will soon be built at the secondary campus.
One of the major forces behind the successful fundraising drive is senior Jillian Guinn.
“I overheard Mr. (Donnie) Lucas talking about the idea, but wondering if the funds could be raised,” said Guinn. “So I talked to Mrs. (Ann) Riley and Mrs. (Jennifer) Corbin, and printed up flyers and mailed out letters. Then I talked to Dee Dee Waggoner and got the National Honor Society Involved.”
Guinn volunteered to design and lead the fundraising because she intends to pursue a career as an event planner and thought this would be a fun way to start working toward her future, while leaving behind a tribute to Melba Graham, and a useful gathering place for her peers.
“We got our last donation in last week!” Guinn said. “Mr. (Edward) Morales is still getting estimates from contractors, and deciding which one will be the best.”
According to Riley, the Graham Memorial Pavilion will be located between the high school building and the junior high building.
Funds are still being accepted toward the cost of a plaque and tables for the area.
