Final preparations for the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock show are underway with a workday scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Saturday at the show barn.

The 2022 show starts with weigh-in on Thursday, Jan. 20 and runs through the sale on Saturday, Jan. 22.

All exhibitors are encouraged to participate in this weekend’s workday, with cleaning supplies such as window cleaner to be provided.

“We’re just going to sweep up, clean up, and get the ring ready,” said Bronco Askew, president of the Shackelford Youth and Livestock Association. “Participants need to bring rakes and shovels, as well as weedeaters if adults come with their kids. This will be the usual cleanup for fire hazards and trash, just getting the facility all cleaned up and ready to go.”

He added that fundraising for the show is nearing completion.

“We’re in the process of gathering up donations,” he said. “The finance committee is working hard making personal contacts. We’re just in high gear trying to get it all done.”

Among the fundraising projects are separate raffles for a 12-gauge shotgun and a processed hog that will be provided by Deep Creek Trading Post of Moran.

For the hog, tickets are $1 each or six for $5. For the shotgun, tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

Tickets can be purchased from any Shackelford County ag student, FFA member, or 4-H member.

Names of the winners will be drawn before the show sale begins on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Weigh-in for animals will begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, with swine, sheep, and goats. Poultry and rabbit weigh-in will start at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, with cattle weighed in starting at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.

Exhibiting will start at 8:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 21 with swine, followed by goats and sheep. Cattle will be shown at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, followed by poultry and rabbits.

Showmanship competition in each category will be held after the animal judging.
