Work begins to install state monuments
By Sam Waller
Work has begun on installing monuments honoring Albany’s three state championship football teams at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.
“The foundations were poured last Friday (Sept. 1),” Albany superintendent Jonathan Scott said. “I’ve been told to expect the monuments to be installed sometime around the end of September.”
The six-foot-by-six-foot granite monuments will be placed outside the stadium’s main entrance around the sign denoting Albany’s 1960 and 1961 Class 2A championships. Albany ended a 61-year title drought last fall by winning the Class 2A Division II crown.
The project was bankrolled by $50,000 raised throughout the spring and summer.
Albany has reached the state final eight times in its history.
