The last day to register to vote in the upcoming March 3 primary election is next Monday, Feb. 3.

According to Belinda Perez, who is in charge of voter registration in Shackelford County, everything is going well.

“We mailed voter registration cards in December, and we sent out reminder letters to everyone whose voter registration card was returned to us by the Post Office,” Perez said.

All those who received letters saying that their voter registration information needs to be updated need to fill out, sign, and return the change of address card that was included with the letter.

The change of address correction must be done in writing, and must include the voter’s signature, so it can not be completed with a phone call.

The confirmation notice needs to be returned to the voter registration office before closing on Monday, or postmarked by Monday, Feb. 3, in order to have the information updated in time for the upcoming primary election.

“If not, those voters will be listed as ‘in suspense,’ said Perez. “If you are a registered voter who is listed ‘in suspense,’ but you still reside in the county, you can vote. But first you will need to fill out a statement of residence form.”

All Shackelford County residents who intend to vote in the upcoming election but have not received their 2020 voter registration cards should contact Perez at the local courthouse before the deadline on Monday to make sure they are properly registered.

“We are completely up-to-date on everything that has come in so far,” said Perez. “We have been updating the voter registration list daily.”

Early Voting

The first day of early voting for the upcoming primaries is Tuesday, Feb. 18. The last day of early voting is Friday, Feb. 28.

In Shackelford County, early voting will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. However, early voting on Fridays ends an hour earlier, at 4:00 p.m., when the Courthouse closes for the weekend.

Depending on the party and the precinct of the voter, selections on the ballot may include candidates for president, U.S. senator, U.S. representative, railroad commissioner, state representative for district 60, various judgeships, county commissioner for precinct 1, and various party ballot propositions.
