Shackelford County residents who haven’t yet registered to vote have until April 7 to sign up if they want to participate in the special statewide amendment election and the county-wide hospital district election on May 7.

Voter registration applications can be found online at votetexas.gov or filled out in person at the Voter Registration/Tax Assessor-Collector’s office at the Shackelford County Courthouse.

Voters who are already registered and wish to request a ballot by mail for the May 7 election can fill out that application that is on the Shackelford County website at www.shackelfordcounty.org.

The deadline for the request to be received in the county clerk’s office is  April 26.

Voters can also call the clerk’s office to request an application form at 325-762-9415 in order to receive one through the mail.

The first day to vote early in person is Monday, April 25. Early voting will end on Tuesday, May 3.

All voting for the combined election will be held in the county courthouse.

“Voters 65 or over who applied for an annual ballot for the March 1 primary election have automatically been sent a mail ballot,” Cheri Hawkins, county/district clerk said. “Those who have already applied for the annual ballot by mail will be sent one for each election that the county conducts for the rest of the year, including the primary run-off on May 24 and the general election in November.”

Hawkins said that the annual ballot to vote by mail is available to any voter over age 65 who fills out the required application.

In addition to the two proposed amendments to the state constitution on the May 1 ballot, the Shackelford County Hospital District trustee election has been combined on the same ballot since both are county-wide elections.

Seven hospital board candidates signed up for three at-large places. The term office is two years.

The list of candidates includes incumbent Myra Hise, along with Jason Price and Mary Beth Jones who are not currently serving on the board but have in the past.

Newcomers who have signed up for the election include Kayla Herron, Rochelle Stewart, Kraymer Harbold, and Elizabeth Roysdon.

Voters should not contact the hospital district office to request a mail ballot for this election.

Having the both elections at the same polling place and one the same county-wide ballot will allow the two entities to split the cost of the election, according to Hawkins.

The other five entities in the county have cancelled their elections because there are no contested races.
