Volunteers help clean up

By Sam Waller

Albany residents volunteered their time, equipment, and manpower Saturday, June 11 for the Albany Chamber of Commerce’s community cleanup day.

“I had a great turnout from my board, and several community people chipped in,” Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones said. “We got a lot done.”

Jones said volunteers were able to complete the list of jobs that needed doing.

“We had a lot of weedeaters and lawn mowers, and Chris Beard had a tractor,” she said. “People were still putting stuff in the dumpsters on Tuesday. Cleanup is continuing.”

Jones attributed the success of the endeavor to the number of repeat volunteers.

“It works so smoothly now,” she said. “Everybody that did it last year did it again this year. They knew where they were going and did the same things.”

In fact, Jones said, a few extra tasks were able to be accomplished.

“We were able to pick up some bigger items out of people’s yards that we might not have gotten in past years because we had a tractor available this time,” she said. “That was helpful.”

First National Bank provided coupons for burger combos at Happy Grill in appreciation for all who volunteered.

“The food was fabulous,” Jones said. “I don’t think we could have had a better day.”

Chamber Lunches

Jones reminded members that weekly Chamber lunches will be suspended the next two Fridays during the run of the Fort Griffin Fandangle.

“We’ll start back July 1 at the Icehouse,” she said.
