With a local event planned on May 31, Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have served our country, and local veterans can be honored by adding their names to the Shackelford County veterans memorial marker.

Local organizer Mary Kay O’Connor said she is still accepting veterans’ names to be added to the monument.

“Veterans do not have to be deceased, nor do they have to have served in a war to be included on the memorial marker,” said O’Connor.

Names must be received by next Monday, May 10 to be  added to the marker before Memorial Day on Monday, May 31.

Veterans’ names will need to be submitted the way they will appear on the marker, along with proof of service.

The cost of engraving each name is currently $75.

Limited scholarships are available if money is preventing someone from adding a name to the marker.

Persons needing a scholarship will need to contact O’Connor to see if they qualify for assistance.

For more information or to submit a name, contact O’Connor at 325-660-2498.
