UIL competitors place at Wylie

Several Albany High School students competed in the Wylie Valentine UIL Classic last Saturday, bringinghomebothmedals and ribbons.

Albany students placed in all five of the journalism events, as well as math, computer science, and science.

“I’m so proud of our kids,” UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “To place at Wylie is quite an accomplishment.”

The journalism events included all 1A through 6A competitors, while the some of the non-writing events were broken down into smaller classifications both by grade level and school size.

Albany students took three places in news writing includingAveryEveritt – second, Robyn Trail – third, and Braylyn Abbate – fourth.

Everitt also won the gold medal in editorial writing, and Sidney Russell was first for the gold in copy editing.

Trail took third in headline writing and fifth in feature writing.

Jonathan Coody and Ben Barwon tied for sixth place in mathematics in the 1A-3A division in the 11th and 12th grade level. Landon Picquet placed fifth in the 1A-3A division for grades 9-10.

Finally, Holden Sanchez tooksixthincomputer science.

Several students are also competing in a virtual meet starting next week and continuing through early March. Only contests with gradeable tests are included, which eliminates writing and speaking events.

The District 10-2Ameet is set to be held in Anson on April 3, with the top three places advancing to theRegion2UILAcademic Meet at Grayson College on April 26-27. The state meet is set for May 13-15 in Austin.
