The list of honor students in the 2021 Albany High School senior class was released last week, naming Hannah Trail as valedictorian and Sidney Bartee as salutatorian.

Trail, daughter of Justin Trail and Tamara Trail, has a four-year average of 98.74.

The salutatorian, Sidney Bartee, daughter of Traci and Stephen Bartee, has earned an overall average of 98.185.

Local students earn the traditional grade point average based on numeric grades for each class. However, it is actually a weighted grade point system that is used to determine class ranking.

Rank is based on core academic classes only with honors and dual credit courses receiving more rank points.

The students in the top 25 percent of the class are designated as honor students. This year there are six honor students in addition to the top two graduates. Grade point averages for those students have not yet been officially released.

The honor students, in alphabetical order, include Jackson Chapman, Morgan Garcia, Elia Hebel, Allison Hill, Paige Picquet, and Tana Thompson.

Valedictorian

The 2021 valedictorian, Hannah Trail, has been a class officer and student council member all four years of high school. She also has been a National Honor Society member and president.

She has competed in volleyball during her high school career, helping the team to earn a co-district champion and state semi-finalist titles.

Trail has written for the Lions Roar school newspaper, has been a cheerleader, served on the Feed Store Board, performed in the Fort Griffin Fandangle and One-Act Play, and is a National Merit Scholar.

She also has participated in UIL academics and has won district champion and regional qualifier in multiple events. She will compete in the state UIL meet this weekend in Editorial Writing.

Trail also did an internship her junior year, shadowing orthopedic surgeons and learning about medical procedures at Abilene Sports Medicine & Orthopedics.

The valedictorian plans to attend Texas Christian University in the fall and major in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Salutatorian

Sidney Bartee has been class president, and served on student council while attending Albany High School.

Bartee has been in band all four years of high school and served as drum major her junior and senior years.

She was elected Lions Club Sweetheart and has also been named Cross Country MVP.

Bartee has participated in FFA and tennis, as well as UIL Science, Mathematics, and Ready Writing.

She has been a member of the National Honor Society her junior and senior years, and is an editor on the Lions Roar staff.

The salutatorian plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in nutrition, with a possible career goal of becoming a dietician.
