Nancy Smith Elementary School students will get two days to run and play this month with the annual track meet and field day.

The track meet will be Monday, May 23 at the Albany High School track. The field day will be Tuesday, May 24 at Webb Park.

On both days, students will be transported from NSES at 9:00 a.m. to the event locations.

“Lunch will be provided,” NSES principal John Gallagher said. “We’ll have bounce houses and all sorts of activities at the field day, with some high school students helping us out. Everything is about the same as last year.”

One change will be having events like water kickball and water relay as part of the track meet instead of the field day.

“We’ll do all the races in the morning, lunch will be provided, then we’ll do the water events in the afternoon,” Gallagher said.

Field day events will include sack races and tug-of-war.

“We are not using the pool  again this year,” Gallagher said. “We’ll have some water events at the track meet, but the field day will be all dry events.”

There will be no early dismissal. Students will be released from the elementary campus at the regular times Monday-Wednesday during the final week of school.

Parents and other volunteers will be needed during both days. More information concerning signups will be releases from the elementary school prior to the events.

End of Year Activities

STAAR testing will take place for third through sixth grades on May 10-11 with fifth grade continuing testing on May 12.

First and second grade students took a trip to the Abilene Zoo last week.

Next week, Pre-K and Head Start classes will visit various sites around town, including the Old Jail Art Center. Sixth grade students will visit the OJAC on Thursday, May 12.

Only one early release day remains on the school calendar after schedule changes to make up for time missed because of inclement weather. On Thursday, May 26 – the last day of school – NSES students will be released at 2:30 p.m.

“Everything else is regular schedule,” Gallagher said.
