Taxes Exceed $1 Million
Richard Petree, Interim Chief Appraiser for the Shackelford County Appraisal District, recently released information on the amount of delinquent tax ac-counts within the Tax District.
Petree said that low col-lection rates in some of the jurisdictions prompted the investigation into the amounts due and indicated that over a million dollars in delinquent taxes are owed across all years.
Shackelford County has unpaid accounts for all historical years exceeding $365,000, according to Petree’s report. Albany ISD accounts are over $284,000, Moran ISD is more than $163,000, Shackelford Hospital accounts exceed $103,000, and City of Albany are more than $71,000.
“These amounts are totally unacceptable,” said Petree. “It is unfair to all the rest of the local taxpayers that anyone be allowed to not pay timely. I would recommend that anyone who knows they owe delinquent tax, contact our office and set up a payout agreement. Otherwise, lawsuits will be filed to collect those taxes, and delinquent taxpayers will incur additional costs.”
Petree added that all tax units are struggling to keep up financially with increasing costs for almost all services provided.
“We need to ensure that we are doing all we can to get the amounts paid that they expected,” Petree continued. “It is also unfair to property owners to let them get far behind on their taxes, not be able to catch up on payments, and ultimately lose their property.
