The way high school seniors make memories and are honored for their achievements in 2020 is uncharted territory for the students, parents, and administrators.

The academic and athletic honors previously awarded during banquets held in May with students actually in attendance will still be awarded but in a less formal manner.

The Albany Academic Booster Club is awarding students for the top ACT and SAT test scores. The following students have achieved the top scores and will receive money to assist in paying for future school expenses.

The top ACT score is a tie between Addison Asher and Gregori Mikeska. Each student will receive $1,000. Aubrey Moon and Jaleigh Morales tied for third place. Each of them will receive $250.

Moon attained the top SAT score. She will receive $1,000. Behind Moon is Asher, receiving $500. Third place winners are Alayna Koemel and Morales. Each student will receive $250.

Other students who scored within a range will be recognized by the Academic Booster Club with a monetary gift that ranges from $50 to $150.

“We appreciate the Academic Booster Club and all they do to recognize the students of Albany,” said local counselor Jenny Scott.

Other awards for honor roll, agriculture, one act play, and UIL journalism will be awarded to students when they come to pick up and return school items on May 14.

Albany Junior High and High School principal Edward Morales said memorial and athletic awards will be passed out starting May 14 to the senior class. Class members down to seventh grade will be informed by e-mail and Facebook of their specific time slot to come to the school to receive athletic honors.

“This is rough on the students to miss the last part of the school year,” Morales said. “To make sure their achievements are recognized, this is the best we could come up with.”

Tisha Wilkins, who is associated with The Feed Store and an officer for both the Academic Booster Club and the Athletic Booster Club is preparing a virtual banquet for these students and their parents.

“We want to give these kids something extra,” Wilkins said.

The link for the virtual banquet will be on the school’s webpage and the Facebook pages for the academic and athletic booster clubs.
