Several Shackelford County youth, parents, and advisors are in the middle of one of the busiest times of the stock show season, with Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin all underway over the next few weeks.

Thirteen local students showed barrows and steers at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo last week, and among the local winners was Slayton Parsons, who took reserve champion light weight cross barrow with his pig, and Kenzie Neve who placed fifth in her class of Shorthorn steers.

Gracie Price placed 10th, making the Fort Worth premium sale with her Polled Hereford steer before she traveled two hundred miles southeast over the weekend to claim two second place ribbons at the San Angelo show with her Maine Anjou heifers.

“This week we are headed to San Antonio with sheep and goats and to San Angelo with steers and barrows,” Albany ag advisor Beard said. “And then this weekend we’ll be taking steers and swine to San Antonio.”

Ft. Worth Jr. Barrows

Junior barrows were judged on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Slayton Parsons placed second in class 31, light weight cross bred barrows, and then came back in the ring to win reserve champion light weight cross bred barrow. Parsons had purchased the Kilmer bred pig at the Albany pig sale.

Chelsy Parsons took 10th in class 41, heavy weight cross bred barrows.

Also showing barrows at Fort Worth were Hannah Snyder, Allison Lemond, Susie Cormack, Corbin Roberts, David Hardin, and Jade Bean.

Ft. Worth Jr. Steers

The junior steer show was on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 6 and 7.

Kenzie Neve was fifth in class 15, light weight Shorthorn steers.

Gracie Price also made the sale, placing 10th with her entry in class 12, medium weight Polled Hereford steers.

J.T. Holland just missed the premium auction, with 11th in European heavy weight cross steers.

Cade Neve placed 14th in heavy weight Shorthorn steers.

Hattie Braly showed her heavy weight Angus steer to 15th place.

Also showing a Shorthorn steer in Fort Worth was Kam Browning.

“Fort Worth is the toughest steer show in Texas and five of our six steers from Shackelford County were placed, with two making the sale,” said Kenzie and Cade’s mother Leslie Neve. “Three thousand steers are entered at Fort Worth, so it’s a great accomplishment.”

Kenzie Neve’s steer “Troy” is the same one that she showed to reserve grand champion steer at the local county show.

“We didn’t want him to shed his hair, so we waited to clip him until right before Fort Worth,” said Leslie Neve. “Kenzie’s given him about 300 baths since we brought him home last March. He was very difficult to keep white.”

San Angelo Jr. Heifers

Gracie Price showed two of her heifers at San Angelo on Friday, Feb. 7.

Price placed second in class 3, Junior Maine Anjou heifers calved Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, 2019 with Gracie Girl 16.

The local high school freshman brought home another second place ribbon with Gracie Girl 15 in class 8, Junior Maine Anjou heifers calved May 1 to Aug. 31, 2018.
