Students end year with fun events

Students and staff from Nancy Smith Elementary School were able to dodge the elements long enough to get in their annual track meet and field day as the school year draws to a close.

The events were both held Tuesday, May 23, at the high school track. The field day was supposed to be at Webb Park that afternoon, but it was too wet, so the students stayed at the track for those events as well.

“We were wondering after the storm Monday night what it was going to look like, but we went for it and had a great success.” NSES principal John Gallagher said. “We had a great time overall.”

Both elementary and secondary students have engaged in a slate of activities this week.

NSES students followed Tuesday’s playday with an awards assembly Wednesday, May 24 and a talent show at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 25 (today).

A junior high awards assembly was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today in the auxiliary gym.

Both campuses have early release at 12:30 p.m. today.

Albany ISD offices will be closed Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day, then start summer hours on Tuesday, May 30. The administration, junior/senior high and NSES offices will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday until the start of the next school year.

Summer school is  planned at both campuses 8:00 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday from June 5 through June 23.

According to AJSHS principal Glen Hill, secondary students can attend summer school to make up attendance requirements if they failed to meet the 90 percent rule, to improve grades in specific courses, or if they failed STAAR or EOC tests. Instruction will focus on individual needs.
