Albany High School students competed at the Haskell Pow Wow, a University Interscholastic League academic invitational meet, on Saturday, Jan. 25, and several Albany students brought home individual medals. In addition, Albany students won second place in journalism.

“I was very pleased with how our students did for their first tournament of the year,” Rick Davis, UIL coordinator said. “Overall, we finished fifth out of 11 schools that were there. That’s not bad considering we only had six students who were able to attend!”

Many had a conflict because of their participation in the local stock show which also took place last Saturday, but Davis was pleased with the efforts of those students who were able to attend the Haskell Pow Wow.

“Addison Asher had a great day, placing in each of her five journalism events” Davis said. “Paige Picquet did a great job as this is her first UIL experience ever. Tana Thompson and Sarah Cotter did great, and I think they will even do better as time progresses.”

Winning the Pow Wow was Jim Ned with 346. Coleman was second with 298.5 points. Haskell had 136 for third, and Cisco, with 86, was fourth.

Albany earned a total of 78 points for fifth overall.

Also at the practice meet were Stamford (64.5), Guthrie (58), Aspermont (48), Jayton (47), Olney (47), and Quanah (22).

Individual Winners

Addison Asher won first place medals in both copy editing and in news writing. The senior was second in editorial writing, third in headline writing, and fourth in feature writing.

Junior Tana Thompson was fourth in copy editing.

Sophomore Sarah Cotter took sixth place in news writing.

The Albany journalism team claimed second place with 70 points. Coleman was the top journalism team with 134, while Guthrie took third with 38 tallies.

Paige Picquet was fourth in ready writing.

Also entered at Haskell were Elia Hebel, Jaleigh Morales, and Max Balliew.

Upcoming Events

Davis anticipates a larger number of local entries in the UIL practice academic meet in Stamford on Saturday, Feb. 22.

“I am looking forward to it and am hoping to see three to four times as many students participating,” said Davis. “Now that their feet have gotten wet in competition, I think the students will be more interested in putting time in to improve their performance.”

The district meet is scheduled for Monday, March 23 in Stamford.

The regional UIL academic meet is in Odessa on April 17-18, and the state meet will be in Austin on April 30 through May 2.
