Students compete in UIL practice

A small contingent of just eight students kicked off the 2022 UIL academic season last Saturday in Haskell, with three journalism competitors bringing home awards.

Seniors Sarah Cotter and Ty Everitt both picked up a pair of medals at the contest, while junior Ashley Richards earned a first place.

“We actually had only eight kids attend the meet, which is a rough way to start the season,” UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “There were conflicts with the local stock show on Saturday that kept several of our regular competitors from attending.”

Cotter took second place in both editorial writing and news writing, while Everitt placed fourth in news and fifth in feature writing.

Richards earned a first place medal in headline writing.

“The journalism students did well, but they were the only ones to earn first through sixth places,” Davis said. “We are looking at being much more competitive on Feb. 26 when we go to our next invitational meet in Stamford.”

Davis himself was unable to attend the meet due to illness.

“I really appreciate Andre Raymond and Jennifer Everitt for handling the meet without me,” he said. “Even though they didn’t place, I know Mr. Raymond was pleased with a couple of the science scores our kids had that were just out of placing.”

He added that sponsors will have the next month to work individually with competitors to prepare for the second meet.

The district meet is set for Thursday, March 24 in Hawley. The top three places will advance to the Region II UIL Meet in April to try to earn spots to go on to the state meet in May at the UT Austin campus.
