Several Albany students are scheduled to participate in an academic practice meet Saturday, Feb. 26, at Stamford.

“Any of the kids who are available to go and get some practice time in, we’ll take them,” Albany UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “For some of the events, we’re trying to figure out who’s on the team. This will help us make our decisions.”

Davis said as many as 20 students will be available to participate.

“When we went to Haskell last month, it was on stock show weekend,” he said. “We had quite a few kids involved in the stock show who would have gone otherwise. We had 10 kids registered, and of that, only eight were able to make it.”

Davis said attendance at such meets is crucial to prepare students for district competition.

“It allows kids to get some practice time in,” he said. “Springtime is so busy with athletics, classwork, and everything else that it’s hard for us to step aside and practice for the district meet. Going to these practice meets is sometimes the only practice they get.”

Albany competes in District 10-2A with Anson, Cisco, Hamlin, Haskell, Hawley, and Stamford. The district meet will be March 24. The Region II-2A meet will be April 22-23 at Grayson College in Denison.
