Students to compete at practice meet

Fifteen Albany High School students will travel to Haskell this Saturday, Jan. 26 for the annual Haskell UIL Pow Wow, an academic practice meet.

“We have 15 students entered in 13 different contests for a total of 38 individual entries,” said Rick Davis, UIL coordinator. “Several of them are doing multiple events.”

This year the student numbers are down significantly from the 37 that competed last year, but still 50 percent greater than the 10 entered in 2017.

“We have several conflicts going on this weekend which is keeping our total number of students down,” said Davis.

Davis added that the scheduling conflicts with the Haskell Pow Wow are not school activities, and there will be a second practice meet, in Stamford, on Feb. 23.

“What I love about these tournaments is that we can take an unlimited number of students in most of the events and let the students get the experience,” Davis said. “Journalism has been working in some form or fashion all year through the journalism and newspaper classes, but the rest of us are just getting started.”

The district meet will be at Hawley on Tuesday, March 26.

“I hate to have the district meet on a Tuesday, because that is when we have baseball and softball games,” said Davis. “But there were other conflicts that the district had to deal with, so it ended up on Tuesday.”

The coaches know about the UIL meet, and students ball players should still be able to participate, according to Davis.

“Hawley is starting the district meet early that morning, so we should be done with most all of our events (in plenty of time),” Davis said. “It will be a matter of shuffling them from one site to another.”

The regional UIL academic meet is in Odessa on April 13-14, and the state meet will be in Austin on May 2-4.

Representing Albany in Haskell this Saturday will be Addison Asher, Max Balliew, Sidney Bartee, Jackson Chapman, Kade Everitt, Morgan Garcia, and Alayna Koemel.

Also  competing at the practice meet are Seth Hale, Caroline Masters, Jaleigh Morales, Chris Rivera, Taylor Scott, Tana Thompson, Hannah Trail, and William Webb.
