The 2023 UIL academic season will kick off on Saturday with local high school students attending the first practice meet of the year.

A total of nine students will travel to Haskell for the meet, competing oin a number of events.

“We have nine students who are able to attend the Haskell meet on Saturday,” high school academic UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “This is the local livestock show weekend, so we are happy to have nine students who are not involved in the stock show to get the academic season started.”

Davis said that the number of events students will compete in varies.

“We have some who are only in one event, but others who have six events,” he said. “The Haskell meet often conflicts with our stock show, but we take those who can go to start the year.”

A larger group of students is attending the second meet of the season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Wylie High School in Abilene.

“Our students will actually have a choice between going to Wylie on Feb. 11 or participating in a virtual meet sponsored by Stamford on Feb. 10-17,” Davis said. “The kids can’t compete in both because they use the same set of testing materials  from UIL.”

Davis noted that the number of competitors at the Wylie meet is much larger, with schools ranging from Class 1A through 6A competing together. He did note that some contests at Wylie this year will have two divisions – one for freshmen and sophomores and another for juniors and seniors.

The practice meets all lead students to the district level competition. Albany will compete on Wednesday, March 22 at Stamford in the district meet.

Students who place in the top three at district will advance to the Region 2 UIL Meet at Grayson College on April 21-22. The State UIL Academic Meet will be held in Austin on May 17-18.
