Students compete at Field Day

The Nancy Smith Elementary School annual field day was held last Monday, May 20 at the high school track. Events included high jump, long jump, softball and football throws, a 400 meter relay, 75, 100, and 200 meter runs, tug-of-war, water slide, water relay, and water kickball.

“We did not have as many running events this year because we needed to have enough time for the splash events also,” said coach Ginger Norton.

The water events were added to field day last year because the STAAR testing dates did not allow for a separate splash day to fit into the busy end-of-year schedule.

Parents and other volunteers once again assisted the coaches and teachers at field day.

“We try to make sure that we have enough high school students and staff helpers that parents can watch their children participate,” added Norton.

Although the primary purpose of the event is for the children to enjoy the day while participating in physical education activities, the day also helps introduce elementary students to basic track and field events, and scores and times were recorded for some of the grades.
