Students can still sign up for dual credit
By Donnie A. Lucas
Albany High School students entering grades 11 and 12 will again have the opportunity to take dual credit courses during the upcoming school year that earn course credit for both high school and college.
The high school offers a total of 43 hours of dual credit classes through partnerships through both Cisco College and Western Texas college.
Most current students have already signed up for courses for the coming school year last spring, but there is still time to make changes or register for the first time, according to school counselor Brittney Harmon.
All students planning to enroll in dual credit classes must first pass the Texas State Initiative Assessment (TSI) requirement before they can register.
Anyone who has not passed the TSI will have to take it at Cisco College prior to the beginning of the semester. The local district has administered the test in the past, but will not be offering it again in time to enroll for this fall.
Parents or students who need more information about the TSI or enrolling in dual credit courses can email Harmon at -bharmon@albany.esc14.net.
“I have a Power Point presentation that will walk them through the process that I can email to them,” Harmon said. “We met with parents and students in person last spring and offered TSI testing then, but if anyone needs to still take the test or change or add course, they can email me.”
Harmon will not officially be back in her office at the high school until August.
“We caught most of the kids in the spring, but if there are new students or students who have changed their minds about which dual credit courses they are interested in, they should contact me,” she said. “It’s not too late to still sign up or make changes.”
Students have the choice of enrolling in English 3 and English 4 dual credit classes, which includes two semesters of English composition and one semester each of American and British literature through Cisco College.
There are two semesters each of both chemistry and anatomy/physiology being offered, along with two semesters of U.S. History also offered through Cisco College.
In addition, one semester each of government and economics are available to students as part of the Cisco College offering.
One semester (3 hours) of college algebra is taught locally and sponsored by Western Texas College.
Some of the classes will have in-person instructors, while others will be offered online and proctored by a member of the high school staff.
Anyone interested in enrolling or making changes is urged not to wait until school starts on Aug. 17.
