Albany ISD officials were notified late Tuesday afternoon that a local secondary student has tested positive for -COVID-19, and they immediately began working through protocol to notify student families and staff about the lab-confirmed case.

AISD superintendent Jonathan Scott said Tuesday night that any students or staff that were determined to be in close contact with the infected individual will remain off campus for up to 14 days to ensure they do not have the virus.

“While we do not believe that those who were not in close contact with the infected individual have reason to be concerned, we ask that you, as always, watch for symptoms of COVID-19,” said Scott.

He added that school officials are checking seating charts for each class that the individual attends, and other students in close proximity are being contacted.

In addition to personal calls, Scott has posted an official notification on the school’s website and a link on the Albany Jr/Sr High School Facebook page.

“We are taking the required precautions and are continuing to monitor the situation,” said Scott. “Parents and staff will be updated as needed. Please contact the school if you have any questions.”

As of Wednesday morning, the Texas Department of State Health Services COVID dashboard shows 207 tests administered in Shackelford County, with 23 positive/recovered cases and seven probable/recovered cases. None were listed as active.

“Obviously, that does not reflect real time events,” said county judge Robert Skelton.

Albany mayor Susan Montgomery expressed confidence in the school’s handling of the situation.

“They are doing everything possible to isolate the one case and keep the other students and faculty as safe as possible,” said Montgomery. “Please remember  that hand washing, social distancing, and face coverings are still highly recommended to keep everyone safe.”
