Street to close for construction

The portion of Baird Street between Hwy. 180 and Rambler will be closed next week starting on Monday, according to Albany city manager Billy Holson, so that a concrete low water crossing can be constructed at the Rambler intersection.

The street was newly paved two years ago, but Holson said that his plan was always to put concrete where water crosses the road behind the old nursing home.

“I was hoping to get a couple of years out of the asphalt, and we did,” said Holson. “But it keeps spidering and I don’t want it to go any further.”

City crews will demo the intersection on Monday, then Holson hopes that the concrete contractor can pour on Tuesday.

The street will remain closed through the rest of the week so that the concrete can cure.

The street will be barricaded all the way from the Law Enforcement Center through the intersection.

Holson emphasized that there will be access to Rose Addition at the other two entrance points – Rose Street from the Baird highway and Lacy Street from Hwy. 180.

“It will be a little inconvenient for those who live on the east end of Rambler, but hopefully they will think it’s worth it,” said the city manager. “It needs to be done.”

Residents should be aware that the street will be closed from Monday, Aug. 20 at least through Friday, Aug. 24, and possibly longer if the concrete is not poured on Tuesday.
