Shackelford County Library’s annual children’s story hour got underway Tuesday, June 7 with a visit from the Albany Volunteer Fire Department.

The program continues from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  on Tuesday mornings through the end of the month.

“The kids got to check out the fire truck and learn what the firemen do,” organizer Janna Ledbetter said. “We discussed fire safety – stop, drop, and roll.”

Ledbetter said the program has a theme of service to community. Upcoming programs feature DPS officers and EMS personnel.

“Our goal is for the children to see these emergency personnel in a friendly light before they might have to interact with them in a highly charged situation,” she said. “We want them to understand these people are their friends.”

Preschool children must be accompanied by an adult. The program will include crafts instruction by Jan Fulkerson and games related to each story.

Each week’s stories will match the theme of the program, Ledbetter said.

The program is designed to give children access to reading material during the summer and familiarize them with the local library.

Registration is not required to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
