Storm causes minor flooding

Officials seem to agree that Albany and Shackelford County were just an inch or so away from widespread damage when Monday’s heavy rainfall began to let up late in the afternoon.

As it was, the 4.27 inches that fell in a 24-hour period rapidly filled creeks and swept through low water crossings, leaving behind debris, but not a lot of significant damage.

City workers were busy setting out cones and monitoring closed streets, then dealing afterwards with the infiltration of flood waters in the sewer system, city manager Billy Holson said.

He added that there is some new street damage to add to what is already on the city’s repair list.

This week’s rainfall brings the total for the year to 17.53 inches, with 9.43 of that falling in May. The May average is 3.84 inches, with the record of 10.53 inches set in 1982.
