Stores to stay open

Extended downtown shopping and a pool party are planned this evening, with the Chamber of Commerce, local merchants, and Albany churches teaming up for the first annual event.

The back-to-school bash is primarily intended to promote shopping at home, but will also provide some fun for fifth through 12th grade students who are invited to swim for free from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Webb Park pool.

Their parents – and everyone else – will have an opportunity to do some back-to-school shopping after work, with downtown stores staying open past their usual hours until 7:00 p.m.

Then, after the pool closes, all the families can gather at the park for a hot dog supper sponsored and prepared by Albany churches.

The menu will include chips, water, and cookies

“This will give the kids a chance to get back together and have some fun before school starts, and hopefully make people even more aware of what our local merchants have to offer,” said Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones.

She added that Albany churches will have information about Wednesday night programs that typically get underway after the school year starts.

Because of the weather  forecast at press time, plans were being made to meet at the Feed Store from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in case of rain.

“Food, fellowship, and fun is still planned even if the pool is closed,” said Jones.
