Spots available in GED classes

Spots are still available in local GED classes that are taking place on Mondays and Tuesdays each week, according to instructor Kenzie Fairchild.

Official registration was last week, but Fairchild said Monday that the class is not yet full and students can still apply by coming to the Shackelford County Library on Monday or Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. or by calling her at 325-721-5233.

GED classes meet at the library every Monday and Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. throughout the school year, following the AISD holiday schedule.

Participants should be at least 17 years of age (with parent’s consent) or older and must have an ID to register, with a couple of exceptions for 16-year-olds.

Several types of identification forms, all of which must include the student’s name and birthday, are acceptable for registration purposes. However, the student will eventually need to have a photo ID in order to take the tests.

Those who do not have a photo ID when they start classes are assisted in obtaining one.

Fairchild emphasized that child care is not available during class time and students must commit to regular attendance.

A grant from Texas Workforce Commission funds the class. Abilene Adult Education oversees the adult education classes in 19 area counties, including Shackelford.

Students do not pay for the class. However, to obtain their GED, participants must pass four tests that cost $36.25 each, totaling $145 (or more if a student requires more than one try.)

Although students are responsible for paying for tests, scholarships are available for those that need assistance.

Under Age Options

Those under 16 years old can only take GED courses if they have been directed to do so by court order and their parent signs an enrollment form. They must also have a high school withdrawal form.

A parent signature and high school withdrawal form are also needed by anyone 17 or 18 years of age before they can enroll in the class.
