As the holiday season approaches, many people look forward to tasty holiday treats but dread the extra calories and pounds.

One of the requirements of Albany ISD’s Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is to promote staff wellness throughout the year.

The SHAC will kick off their “Fall Fitness Challenge 2020” just in time for the holiday season.

According to Albany ISD school nurse and SHAC member Lisa Russell, these events are a fun way to get to know other staff members, have accountability for fitness goals, and win prizes.

Organizers will need to include three to five on a team, then submit their team names and a list of participants by Friday, Nov. 13.

The challenge will run from Nov. 13 through Dec. 13.

Teams will be given a calendar of exercises to follow.

“Each member will follow the calendar by performing at least three of the exercises and adding their individual starting numbers, for example starting with 10 squats and then increasing by 10 reps for each week,” said Russell. “Members also will add their choice of a cardio component to their schedule at least three to four days per week.”

Russell offered to help those who need substitutions for any of the exercises on the calendar.

Participants also have the option of stopping by their campus nurse’s office before 11:00 a.m. any weekday for a blood pressure or heart rate check or to weigh in before starting the challenge.

While participants can win prizes during the challenge, Russell emphasized that the ultimate prize is stress and anxiety relief, improved cardiovascular health, and overall improvement in personal fitness.
