Seniors stay ready just in case...

Albany High School’s senior class of 2020 is encountering situations that are different from any other class before them, with academic, athletic, and senior celebrations all on hold.

Albany ISD Superintendent Jonathan Scott stated that decisions by higher authorities must be honored.

Communication with state and local officials continue throughout the school closure. Governor Greg Abbott announced last week that schools will be shut down until May 4 and that further evaluation of an extension will be considered as that time approaches. How this will affect graduation is unknown.

“We are discussing possible ideas and hope to have an alternative plan developed within the next few weeks,” Scott said.

Spring UIL events are also adjusting to postponements caused by the coronavirus.

Athlete Blaine Kayga runs track and plays baseball for Albany. He has continued to work out daily for both sports. Running hills and using a batting cage have helped with his training, but without teammates, the process can be challenging, he said.

There has only been one track meet and two baseball games this season.

“I really miss my teammates and was looking forward to going to state in track and baseball,” Kayga said. “This is what I have been working towards since my freshman year.”

Kayga added that he might be disappointed, but he appreciates the community support during this difficult time.

Addison Asher is a UIL participant and went to state last year in three different journalism events, placing in two. She was hoping to return again this spring for her senior year.

“I’m am trying not to be stressed about going or not going, but it would have been cool to make it to state two years in a row,” Asher said.

Tyler Beard, a senior shot put thrower for track and field, said he works out daily so he is ready if and when the season resumes. He also is making the most of these circumstances by working and making money.

Both Asher and Beard are active in Future Farmers of America, and they hope that FFA activities resume.

Senior parent Tammy Clark said the class has been working since September 2019 to raise money for Project Graduation.

The seniors’ big kickoff was the city wide garage sale. With a class size of 44,  they needed to maximize their fundraising efforts in order to plan an event for so many students.

During this point in the school year, seniors have already mailed out letters to local businesses asking for donations for Project Graduation. They are now waiting to see what happens with government restrictions to guide them on their next steps.

Parents and seniors are struggling to know what to do about graduation invitations, announcements, and parties planned for friends and family.

“We are all in this together,” Clark said. “In true Albany fashion, we know that we will get through it all. The normal senior activities just may look different than they ever have before.”

To make a donation to the senior class 2020 Project Graduation, send it to Susie Beard, 516 Kenshalo Street, Albany TX 76430.
