Albany High School seniors have a little over one week until they cross the stage and receive their diplomas, and several activities are planned for the soon-to-be graduates between now and Friday, May 27.

This Week

Seniors will practice for Baccalaureate during WIN time on Thursday, May 19 in the AHS auditorium,

Caps and gowns are  being distributed this week.

Gowns will need to be removed from the bags, hung up, and possibly steamed to remove wrinkles.

All National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America sashes, blood donation cords, and Valedictorian and Salutatorian  collars will be loaned by the high school and handed out to the graduates before the Baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies.

The senior class will take a trip to Six Flags on Friday, May 20.

Prior to the bus leaving at 8:00 a.m., the First Christian Church men’s group will provide breakfast for the seniors at 7:00 a.m.

Saturday, May 21

The future graduates will meet up at the high school gym parking lot at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 to ride a bus to the Progressive Dinner.

The fiesta meal will begin with appetizers at Mark and Jennifer Everitt’s home.

The second stop at Mike and Darla Cotter’s house will be for the main course, and the third and final stop for the meal is for dessert and opening of the time capsules at the home of Sara and Curring Browning.

The time capsules were made when the local seniors were in the fourth grade and have been sealed since that time.

Parents of students who were not attending Albany schools in fourth grade have been contacted to make a time capsule for their senior, filled with notes from family, pictures, and childhood toys or objects.

Although parents are welcome to come to all the stops on the Progressive Dinner, typically all of the parents try and come to the capsule openings.

Graduation Week

On Sunday, May 22 the seniors are asked to gather at First Baptist Church for the traditional Bible presentation, starting at 2:00 p.m.

They will then go to the AHS auditorium at 3:00 p.m. for group pictures, followed by a 4:00 p.m. Baccalaureate service.

At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, graduation practice will be held and individual pictures taken in the Albany High School gymnasium.

Students should bring their caps, gowns, and tassels to the practice. Stoles will be passed out before the pictures.

Graduation Day

Graduation will be Friday night, May 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the high school gymnasium.

A reception honoring the graduates will be held at the Whitney Theatre following the ceremony.

The reception is organized by the senior parents. with the junior ushers, usherettes, and their parents serving and cleaning up afterwards.

Project Graduation kicks off about 10:30 p.m. that same night at the Feed Store, with details in a separate article.
