After a year’s delay, the doors of the Albany Senior Citizens Activity Center are finally about to be opened.

Board president Tracy Sullivan said board members met on Monday, April 5 to discuss details about getting the facility into operation.

The board was gearing up to launch last year when the pandemic hit. Senior adults were among those most at risk, and plans were put on hold.

“We will have a ‘soft-opening’ May 4 through June 11,” Sullivan said. “Our hours of operation will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.”

During the next few weeks, board members will finish decorating the center in preparation for the grand opening to the public.

The grand opening will  honor the late Rodney Alexander and his family and will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11 with a ribbon cutting, reception, and refreshments.

Alexander was Albany’s  mayor in January 2020 when he died suddenly from an apparent brain aneurysm.

He was instrumental in securing the building for the center, as well as serving as general contractor until his death.

The project was completed by his son and business partner, Cody Alexander.

Senior game days previously held on Fridays at the Shackelford County Library will resume at the center after a year’s lapse due to COVID, and will again be hosted by Kindred at Home.

Starting in August, the board plans to bring in age-related presentations dealing with health and finance.

The center is intended for use only by senior citizens age 55 and above with no exceptions.

It will not be rented to families, church or school groups, or other organizations, according to board members.
