The annual Albany Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was held Monday, Feb. 6 at the Scout Hut with Gannon Rankin taking first place overall.

A total of four Scouts from the Wolf and Bear Dens took part in the event. Scouts build cars out of a kit containing block of wood with four wheels and four nails for axles. Cars may be carved and decorated, but must meet length, width, and weight requirements. Cars are powered by gravity on a sloped track.

“This was my first year to be involved,” Wolf Den leader Tiffany Waddell said. “I didn’t know all the rules until (committee chair) Teri Lucas told me.  The weight can’t be more than five ounces.”

Heats matched cars with Scouts drawing for lanes. Waddell said the format allowed Scouts to make runs in both lanes.

Following the competition, a number of match races were held among past and present competitors.

Following Rankin were Lennon Lucas in second place, Connor Walser in third, and Jackson Waddell fourth.

Ribbons were awarded to all places along with participation ribbons.

Tiffany Waddell announced this week that the annual Blue and Gold Banquet is planned for 6:00 p.m. Monday, March 6 at the Scout Hut.
