Dozens of local scholarships were presented to members of the Albany High School Class of 2019 during commencement exercises held last Friday, May 24.

There were well over 100 separate awards for the small class of 28, with some scholarships split among more than one recipient, amounting to about $90,000 for the first year alone, not counting any amounts promised for subsequent years.

The awards were given by about 35 local churches, clubs, organizations, foundations and individuals.

The oldest of the awards is the Robert Nail Scholarship given by the Ex-Students Association for the first time in 1967 for a total of $100.

One of the newest of the donating organizations is the Albany ISD Education Foundation, which in its 10th year is giving 20 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each per year.

The Henry Martin Rockwell Endowment Fund administers several scholarships, the largest in  honor of John and Nell Carter. This year, there were six $2,000 scholarships from that fund alone, totaling $12,000.

Commencement

The 2019 commencement ceremony was held in the Albany High School gymnasium before a crowd of friends and relatives.

Twenty-eight members of the class were seated on a stage prior to receiving their diplomas from Albany High School principal Edward Morales along with outgoing Albany ISD board president Betsy Parsons, and counselor Dee Dee Waggoner.

Cisco College faculty member Linda Spetter, who teaches the local dual credit English classes, was on the program to award some additional scholarships to those planning to attend Cisco in the fall.

Class valedictorian Caroline Masters and salutatorian Jillian Guinn each addressed those attending the event.
