Rogers closer to fundraising goal
By Sam Waller
Beverly Rogers of Albany is steadily nearing her overall goal of raising $100,000 for Alzheimer’s awareness.
Rogers raised $5,825, the second-highest individual total this year in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, held Oct. 9 at Abilene’s Grover Nelson Park.
Rogers was sponsored by Team Albany, 59 contributors who donated to her fundraising effort.
The 2021 event raised $115,065 despite lingering COVID-19 issues. Ed Greenlee of Abilene raised $6,150 for top honors.
“My personal goal is to get $100,000 from Albany while I’m still able to do this,” said Rogers. “After 19 years, we have $90,825.”
The in-person event was cancelled last year because of the pandemic, and Rogers was happy the 2.5-mile walk was back on this year.
“We were in groups of 10-15 people,” she said. “About 400 people showed up.”
Rogers received an Elite Grand Champion certificate last week at the Alzheimer’s Association banquet, when results of the fundraising were announced.
Rogers became involved in the cause while working as a caregiver for Helen Lieb, who died of the disease in 2006. Rogers remains hopeful a cure will be found.
“We can do it; I’m just positive about it,” she said. “And I give God all the glory because He is the one who has set this up and kept us going.”
