Riley, Castro win in local races

Incumbent commissioner Steve Riley kept his seat in Shackelford County’s precinct 1, fending off challenger Bobby Williams in Tuesday’s Republican primary election.

Riley garnered 62 percent of the 213 ballots cast in precinct 1, where there are 577 registered voters. He will not face any Democratic opposition in the general election in November.

Attorneys Isaac Castro of Hamlin and Deborah Dictson of Hawley ran a tight race for DistrictAttorney’s position, being left open by the retirement of Joe Edd Boaz. Castro won with 53 percent of the vote.

Several other local incumbent candidates, including county attorney Rollin Rauschl, sheriffEdwardMiller,constable Xavier Perez, and commissioner Lanham Martin, were unopposed on the Republican primary ballot, although Rauschl is expected to face write-in JohnMontgomeryinthegeneral election.

A total of 692, slightly under 30 percent, of the county’s 2,338 registered voters turned out for the elections, with all but 18 of those casting ballots on the Republican side.

County voters followed the statewide trends in most elections. U.S.RepresentativeJodey Arrington was overwhelmingly reelected, with 87 percent of the county vote and a little less than 83 percent over District 19, defeating challengers Chance Ferguson, Vance Boyd, and Ryan Zink.
