Republicans carry county

The presidential race plus local board elections delayed from May due to COVID brought out large numbers of county voters for the 2020 General Election, with a large percentage voting early and absentee.

A total of 1,635 voters cast ballots, representing 70.87 percent of the 2,307 registered voters in the county. This compares with 1,521 voters in the presential election in 2016.

As has been the case in recent years, there was a huge gap in all contested state and national races, with Republicans earning 90 to 93 percent of the local vote.

Though Trump won Texas, the final outcome of the presidential election was unsure at press time.

Local Races

Albany ISD incumbent Ginny Ivy kept her seat in a close race against challenger Paul Johnston, tallying 616 votes to Johnston’s 555 in an election that is usually held in May.

Also delayed by the pandemic, the top four vote-getters in a five-man race for the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors’ election included Chris Beard, Myra Hise, Janna Ledbetter, and newcomer John Peterson, who edged out John Ayers.

Four out of five candidates will serve on Moran’s city council, with John Steninger defeated by Dora Cook Leonard, Tyler George, Cindy Huskey, and Christal Herrell.
