Red Ribbon Week at both Nancy Smith Elementary and the junior/senior high campus wrapped up last week with winners named in contests at both locations.

This is the 34th year that the district has participated in the annual campaign that brings awareness to the dangers of drug and alcohol use.

The campaign is sponsored by Albany ISD and the Albany Task Force on Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

NSES Events

Nancy Smith Elementary hosted a week of dress-up days for students, as well as holding a poster contest.

The competition was held in four age groups, with first, second, and third place winners receiving cash prizes. First place was awarded $25, followed by $15 for second place and $10 for third place.

The prize money was provided by the Albany Task Force.

“We had a good response again this year,” elementary counselor Susie Beard said. “Some of the posters were really creative.”

Winners were picked for the four divisions.

Pre-K, Head Start, and kindergarten division: 1. Taigyn Loveall, 2. Bautista Tadeo.

First and second grade: 1. Kate Bellah, 2. Daxton Lehew, 3. Joshua Knight.

Third and fourth grade: 1. Reese Nitschke, 2. McCamey Vaughn, 3. Berkley Davis.

Fifth and sixth grade: 1. Kayden Smith, 2. Artie Bell, 3. Hailey Gleitz.

Students were given various items during the week to remind them to stay away from drugs and alcohol, such as pencils, stickers, suckers, and braclets.

Secondary Events

The junior/senior high school also conducted dress-up days during the week, with winners selected for each day. The dress-up days were sponsored by the student council.

A student and teacher were picked as winners each day.

Monday (PJs): Melissa Olivarez, Melanie Turner.

Tuesday (Senior citizens): Leddie Leech, Chanel Hayner.

Wednesday (Favorite decade): Ella Webb, Tammy Kelsey.

In addition, classroom doors were decorated by WIN time students. Results were announced at the pep rally last Friday prior to the Hamlin football game.

Winning first place and earning a pizza party was the door of Rod Britting’s classroom in the high school hall with the theme, “Rolling Out the Red Carpet for Being Drug Free.”

Second place was Melanie Turner’s door entitled “Win the Game of Life,” and third place went to the journalism room door using the slogan “Drugs are Old News.”

Both second and third places will receive chocolate candy as a reward.
