Contests, prizes and dress-up days will all be part of next week’s Red Ribbon Week at both Albany campuses.

The nationwide theme of the 2022 campaign is “Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free,” which will be observed locally Oct. 24-28.

The campaign educates students and the general public about drug and alcohol abuse. It has been observed locally for 34 years.

Students at both campuses will be given small items to remind them about the dangers of drug and alcohol use such as wrist bands, pencils, stickers, and ribbons.

Students are being urged to participate in dress-up days next week at both the elementary and secondary campuses.

Dress-up Days

The student council is in charge of dress-up days at the junior/senior high campus and will select winners for each day.

There will be separate winners at the secondary campus for students and teachers.

“We will decide daily winners in both student and teacher divisions, plus overall winners for the week for both divisions,” StuCo sponsor Jenny Scott said.

Awards will vary by campus.

The daily dress-up themes at the secondary campus are:

•Monday – “Dream Big ...Be Drug Free. (wear school appropriate pajamas).

•Tuesday – “Be Wise...Don’t Do Drugs!” (dress as senior citizens).

•Wednesday – “Put Drugs in the Past!” (dress as your favorite decade).

•Thursday – “Give Drugs the Boot/Watch out ‘Fore’ Drugs!” (dress country vs. country club).

•Friday – “Black Out Drugs!” (wear black for the black-out pep rally).

Daily dress-up schedule for elementary:

•Monday – “Give Drugs the Boot!” (wear western wear/cowboy hat).

•Tuesday – “‘Lei off Drugs.” (dress Hawaiian – leis will be given at school).

•Wednesday – “Your Future is Bright!” (wear bright colors and sunglasses).

•Thursday – “Being drug free is Groovy!” (wear tie-dye or dress like a hippie).

•Friday – “Red Rally for Drug Free!” (Wear red from head to toe).

Poster Contest

Nancy Smith Elementary will conduct a poster contest during the week, with cash prizes for the top three winners in each of four categories.

The age categories include Pre-K, Head Start and kindergarten, first and second grades, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades.

First place will receive $25, followed by $15 for second and $10 for third in each age category.

Posters should be made on a half-size sheet of poster board with the student’s name and grade on the back.

Entries must be turned in to the school office by Friday, Oct. 28 at 9:00 a.m., but can be submitted at any point during the week.

Door Decorations

The secondary campus will host a door decorating contest by classroom based on students in WIN time.

The winners of the contest will receive a pizza party.

“Each WIN time class will have the week to decorate the door to their classroom with a drug-free theme,” principal Glen Hill said. “The doors will be judged on Friday, Oct. 28 by an outside panel of judges.”

The Red Ribbon campaign, including supplies and prizes, is funded by the Albany Task Force.
