Contests, prizes and themed days will be featured throughout next week as Albany ISD students participate in the 2021 Red Ribbon Campaign.

The campaign educates students and the general public about drug and alcohol abuse. This year’s program will run Oct. 25-29.

Nancy Smith Elementary School will have a poster contest as well as well as dress-up themes for each day.

Posters must be no larger than large construction paper and the student’s name and grade must be on the back of the poster. Entries must be turned in to the school office by 9:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, but may be submitted throughout the week.

The contest will be divided into groups for Pre-K, Head Start and kindergarten; first and second grade; third and fourth grade; and fifth and sixth grade.

Three prizes will be awarded in each group with $25 for first place, $15 for second, and $10 for third. Prizes are sponsored by the Albany Drug Task Force.

Winners will be announced on Nov. 1.

Dress-up themes for NSES are:

Monday – “Go Crazy and Sock it to Drugs” (wear crazy hair and socks);

Tuesday – “I Moustache You Not to do Drugs!” (moustaches and wear red; moustaches will be handed out at school);

Wednesday – “Being Drug Free Rocks!” (dress like a rock star);

Thursday – “No Bones About It! Drugs Are Scary!” (wear a costume; no masks, must be school appropriate);

Friday – “Team Up Against Drugs!” (wear favorite team gear).

At Albany Junior/Senior High School, students will receive small items that promote staying drug free each day.

“They will get pencils one day, then suckers or stickers on another,” school counselor Michaela Bradford said.

Students will also participate in a door decorating contest.

“Each teacher’s second-period class will be decorating their door in any drug-free theme that they choose,” Bradford said. “They have all week to work on that. On Friday, the doors will be judged by an outside panel.”

Bradford said winners will be announced at Friday’s pep rally with prizes for the top three places. The first place class will win a pizza party, Bradford said.
