Albany residents will soon be seeing red as the annual Red Ribbon anti-drug campaign kicks off next Monday morning.

The annual “Red Ribbon Campaign” has been officially set for Oct. 21-25 at the Albany school district.

This is the 31st straight year that the event, which is designed to draw as much attention as possible to the problems of drug and alcohol abuse and its prevention, has been conducted locally.

The national theme for 2019 is “Send a Message. Stay Drug Free.”

The event is sponsored locally by Albany ISD and the Albany Task Force on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, with support provided by several other state and local agencies.

A full five-day observation of Red Ribbon Week including dress-up themes each day will be held on both campuses this year.

Secondary Attire

Secondary counselor Jenny Scott has posted the theme for each of the Red Ribbon Week dress-up days.

Monday, Oct. 21 – Laugh at drugs – dress as your favorite meme.

Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Head to toe, I’m drug free – wear crazy hair and socks.

Wednesday, Oct. 23 – Put a cap on drugs – Wear your favorite cap or hat.

Thursday, Oct. 24 – Drug free through the decades – dress in your favorite decade attire.

Friday, Oct. 25 – Black out drugs – wear black. (This will also be the black out pep rally).

NSES Events

“We will celebrate Red Ribbon Week with drug-free lessons, dress-up days, a poster contest, daily incentives, and pledging to live drug-free lives,” said Nancy Smith Elementary School campus counselor Susie Beard.

Monday, Oct. 21 – Be all you can be. Be drug free – wear camo.

Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Go crazy and sock it to drugs – wear crazy hair and socks.

Wednesday, Oct. 23 – Follow your dreams. Don’t choose drugs – Wear pajamas.

Thursday, Oct. 24 – Voting for a drug free life – wear red, white, and blue.

Friday, Oct. 25 – Team up against drugs – wear red or a favorite team jersey.

Poster Contest

Another special activity at the elementary campus will be the annual drug-free poster contest.

Participating children will design and turn in their posters to the NSES office by 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Prizes are $25, $15, and $10 and are sponsored by the Albany Task Force.

Participation in the poster contest is completely voluntary, but entries must follow all the rules.

Winners will be announced on Monday, Oct. 28.

Elementary students who chose to compete will make individual posters, no larger than a piece of large construction paper, promoting the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse.

The student’s name and grade must be placed on the back of the poster.

The entries need to be brought to the elementary school office by Friday, Oct. 25 to compete for prizes.

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in each of four age groups: pre-K, Head Start and kindergarten; first and second grades; third and fourth grades; and fifth and sixth grades.
