The Albany Study Club will coordinate a summer reading program for children again this year at the Shackelford County Library.

“The theme for this year’s program is ‘A Universe of Stories’ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing,” said library committee chairman Janna Ledbetter.

The summer reading program runs from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the library and will include crafts, books, games, snacks, and more.

The program will begin on Tuesday, June 4 and will be conducted every Tuesday until it ends on June 25.

The theme for the first program on June 4 will be “Blast off to the MOON,” while the theme for June 11 will be “Journey through the Solar System.”

June 18 will emphasize a theme of “Soaring to the Stars,” and the theme for June 25 will be “Adventure with the Aliens.”

The program is open to two to four-year-olds up to to fourth graders.

Children from the age of two to four should have an adult accompany them.

The program is designed to give children access to reading material during the summer since many do not have a chance to read outside of school.

“Summer break contributes to achievement gaps in students between grades,” said Ledbetter. “Summer reading increases prior knowledge needed to succeed in the school year. The more children read over the summer, the more they can comprehend difficult texts.”
