The varsity Lady Lions lost two of three games in the Breckenridge Tournament last week last week to go to 8-6 for the season.

Albany was scheduled to host Ranger on Tuesday, but the game was moved back a day due to the sudden death over the weekend of a school coach. Results of the game against the Lady Bulldogs were not available at press time.

Albany will host DeLeon on Friday, with the JV starting the action at 5:00 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6:00 p.m.

The girls are also on the schedule to host Goldthwaite on Tuesday, Dec. 18 starting with the JV at 4:00 p.m. and followed by the varsity at around 5:15 p.m.

The Lady Lions lost to Eastland, 37-23, in the first round of the Breckenridge tourney on Dec. 6.

“Eastland has a powerhouse 3A program, and although our score doesn’t reflect it, we were still in the game in the second half,” coach Tate Thompson said. “We got after them defensively and held them to fewer points than they usually score. Playing great competition like this makes us a better team.”

Jaleigh Morales was named offensive standout, scoring a team high 10 points.

Also scoring were Torie Fuentes 2, Cydnee Nelson 4, Alli Hill 5, and Sarah Cotter 2.

Albany lost to Class 4A Aubrey on Friday, 34-29.

“We played them really hard and played great defense,” the coach said. “We didn’t beat them, but we gave ourselves a chance to.”

The coach said that the girls are still struggling with their offensive game.

“I feel like that will come with more time in the gym,” he said. “We are seeing the type of competition we have been playing in order to get better.”

Morales was again named the offensive standout, while Elia Hebel was named for defense.

Scoring for Albany were Fuentes 9, Nelson 4, Hill 1, Hebel 4, and Morales 11.

The Lady Lions went back to Breckenridge on Saturday to pick up a 50-26 win over Throckmorton in the third round.

“This was a good outcome for us after playing two really tough games in the tournament,” Thompson said. “Everyone chipped in offensively and did their part. I feel good about the progress the girls made in the tournament.”

Fuentes was top scorer with 16 points, along with Hill and Morales with 11 each, Nelson with 8, Jillian Guinn with 5, Cotter with 4, and Hebel with 3.
