Pursuit ends with spikes
By Melinda L. Lucas
A 18-year-old girl led officers on a high speed chase through the southern part of Albany and then on to Baird before she was stopped by spikes just shy of reaching Interstate 20.
About 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, DPS officer Casey Smith clocked a vehicle at 92 miles per hour six miles west of Albany on Hwy. 180. When he turned his lights on, the driver contined east, reaching speeds of at least 114 MPH, Smith said.
As the vehicle traveled down One Mile Hill and neared the intersection of Hwy. 180 and Hwy. 283, the officer was able to pull up on the car’s left in an attempt to get the driver to turn south onto Hwy. 283S.
“I didn’t want her going through town, although at that time I didn’t know whether it was a male or female,” said Smith. “I didn’t actually hit the vehicle, but I knew I needed to try to ‘push’ her to turn toward Baird, and she did.”
Once they were traveling south, Smith said he “just rode behind her” after alerting law enforcement up ahead, who deployed spikes at the I20 bridge, blowing out all the vehicle’s tires.
Brooklynn Federspiel, 18, of Allen was charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.
Smith said Federspiel admitted to having a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle, and she was ticketed for that offense.
