A motorcyclist avoiding arrest because of reckless driving crashed inside the Albany city limits, ended up in the hospital with relatively minor injuries after attempting to escape from ambulance personnel, and later checked himself out of the hospital.

At press time, Trevor Lane, whose age and address weren’t available, had not been taken into custody, and his wheareabouts were unknown.

On Friday, Sept. 17, the dispatcher at the Shackelford County Sheriff’s Office was informed of a “reckless driver passing multiple vehicles in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed on Hwy. 351.”

According to deputy Jason Price, officers responded and located the subject, who was on a motorcycle, near the Newell Ranch entrance on Hwy. 180.

Price said that officers attempted to stop Lane, but he continued northeast toward Albany, reaching speeds up to 118 miles per hour.

By the time he came into Albany, several officers were in pursuit, and city policemen were waiting to intercept him.

Still traveling at a high rate of speed, “the subject lost control of his motorcycle and crashed near South 4th Street and Main,” said Price.

DPS officer Casey Smith, who was directly behind the motorcyclist when he crashed, said that Lane tried to run after hitting a rock sign, but surrendered without resistance after a short foot pursuit.

Smith said that Lane was not wearing a helmet  and received some injuries from the crash, including a gash on his head.

The Shackelford County EMS was then called to the scene, according to Price.

“The subject was released to EMS, and a warrant was sought for his arrest on evading arrest with a motor vehicle,” said the deputy.

Albany police officer Mark Purpura followed the ambulance to Abilene, where Lane again attempted to escape before he realized an officer was present.

After refusing treatment, Lane left the hospital and is at large.

Albany police chief Mike House said that several charges are pending.
