Pool Splash Day set June 1

By Melinda L. Lucas

The Albany City pool will open to the general public on Wednesday, June 1 with a one-day-only, free-admittance Splash Day.

Albany City pool co-managers this summer are Savannah Maberry, Meg Walser, and Mikaela Jones. Maberry helped with the operation of the facility last summer.

The managers have already started working at the pool, as well as coming up with a lifeguards handbook and organizing the concession stand. The three local residents, who exhibited specific strengths during last week’s city council discussion, will work together to manage the schedule, cleaning, and concession sales.

Maberry commented that she is adding a few healthy options to the concesssion stand list.

They hope to have 20 certified lifeguards in place after this weekend’s two-day training, with close to that number applying for the positions as of press time on Tuesday.

Students or adults who are looking for summer work can pick up applications at the Albany City Hall or Albany High School office.

Prospective employees must be at least 15 years old, but the managers would really like to see some adults apply as well as students.

Jones, who is in her ninth year of working with lifeguards, is coordinating with city recreation department head Brian Holson to update equipment and increase safety at the pool.

Pool Opening

The facility will open to the general public from 12:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 for the annual Splash Day.

Regular pool hours have changed some from last year, as have prices for family passes, individual passes, and pool rentals.

The city council decided last month to close the pool on Mondays rather than being open seven days a week for both scheduling reasons and to have more time for cleaning if needed.

Regular pool hours will be 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Daily entrance fees to the pool during normal hours remain at $2.50 per person.

Local residents may purchase pool passes at the swimming pool. A summer pool pass is $100 for an individual and $200 for a family pass for family members living in the same household.

Individual and family passes do not cover admission to family swim time on Tuesday evenings or during private rental times.

There will be a family swim time on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a special rate of $1 per person. Children must be accompanied by a parent during the time block designated for families.

Pool Rentals

The pool will be available for after-hour rentals for $200 per two-hour time block, which includes lifeguards.

Rentals are not available on Mondays when the pool is closed, according to the council directive.

To inquire about availability for rental or to book a time slot, contact Walser at 432-386-0349.

Pool rental fees must be paid in full at the time the pool is reserved.
