Plans made for car show

The 13th annual Albany Classic Car Show is set to take place on Saturday, April 20, and everyone is invited to come downtown and enjoy the various body styles and polished chrome that reflect memories of yesterdays.

Members of Shifters Car Club will once again serve as hosts for the show, and they are hopeful that a lot of cars will come as long as the weather is cooperative this year.

“We’ve talked to quite a few people, and we’ve been to some shows distributing flyers,” said organizer Robert Snyder. “If the weather holds, we hope to have a good show, with 75 to 100 cars.”

Registration is from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. on April 20. The registration fee is $20 per entry in the car show, with no charge for spectators.

Entries in the competition will be parked on South First Street between First National Bank and the Bank Park and by the vacant lot nearby known as Dr. Shackelford’s Paradise.

The show is open to all classics, antiques, hot rods, customs, trucks, and more.

Members of Shifters Car Club typically display their vehicles in a host lot but do not enter the competition, thus leaving the awards to their guests while allowing spectators a chance to enjoy a larger number of classic vehicles.

“We will have specialty awards and may add a few more of those,” said Snyder. “But instead of participant judging, we are going back to classes with judging by the car show committee members.”

Most other items will be similar to past years, with door prizes, goodie bags, and give-aways sponsored by J.D. Dukes and the Eagle Auto Parts store here in Albany, a disc jockey spinning records, the Friday night cruise and burn out, and vendors.

The cruise is expected to start around 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, with the burn out starting between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m.

Breakfast

King & Robertson Insurance Agency is donating groceries for the breakfast again this year. Members of the Albany Chamber of Commerce will cook and serve breakfast tacos at the Bank Park starting around 8:00 a.m., with a suggested donation of $5 for two tacos.

“We will give all donations to the car museum as an appreciation for all the time, energy, and effort they put in year round,” said Chamber president Ramby Anderson. “In the past, many gracious people have offered and provided additional sides. If anyone has any world famous breakfast items, such as a casserole, pigs in a blanket, fruit salad, or anything they would like to offer on a donation basis, they can contact Mary Beth Jones at the Chamber office at 325-762-2525.”

Vendor Opportunities

Vendor spots at the car show will be the same price as in the past, according to Chamber treasurer Lisa Barton.

Spots are still available free to nonprofits and are $25 for all others.

For more information on vendor spots, contact Barton at 325-762-3388.

For more information or to donate to the car show, call Snyder at 325-762-4555

“We’ve had some good sponsors over the years,” said Snyder. “If you haven’t already been contacted and would like to donate to the show, please call me.”

The rainout date for the event, which will hopefully not be needed this year, is May 18.
