Albany’s Cub Scout Pack 255 will hold its annual Pinewood Derby at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6 at the Scout Hut.

Scouts from Tiger through Webelos are eligible to compete with cars carved from a standard pine block.

“It’s big event,” Wolf Den leader Tiffany Waddell said. “And Jacey Shack has made it very clear at every one of our meetings that he’s going to beat everybody.”

Scouts received kits with materials from making cars and rules for the competition. Entries must meet requirements for height, weight, width, and ground clearance.

Race Rules

Cub Scouts are expected to craft homemade race cars and pair them against each other on a 36-foot aluminum track.

Gravity is used to power the wooden vehicles down the track and across the electronic finish line.

The local Cub Scout Pack will use the same racetrack they have used for the last few years, with cars paired against each other, and the winner of each race advancing.

Each Scout can enter only one car in the local competition. However, the Cub Scouts can also take a car to the council race in Abilene if they choose to.

Luminary Sales

Pack 255 raised $250 to help cover medical expenses for Albany kindergarten student Adalyn Kirby by selling luminaries in December.

“The family is waiting for the referrals to go through so she can begin treatment,” Waddell said.

Valentine’s Project

Cub Scouts will send out 200 Valentine’s Day cards for nursing home residents.

Waddell said the project is a continuation of the Scouts’ Christmas card project in December.

“Everybody comes out at Christmas time,” Waddell said. “I’m shooting for the Bear and Wolf Dens to send cards for Valentine’s, Easter, and other events throughout the year.”
