This time of year several hundred area elementary and middle school students and teachers normally prepare to make the annual trip to Living History School Day at Fort Griffin State Historic Site for a reenactment of day-to-day life in the real Old West.

However, with the lingering pandemic, Fort Griffin site manager Mitch Baird said the staff has decided it’s not a good idea to bring in 800 kids and 100 reenactors who are usually on site for the event.

“We are currently working on educational virtual programs to post online,” Baird added.

He explained that the hope is for the virus to dwindle down, and then they can look at adding back Fort Griffin’s in-person group events.

“We still plan to provide the Longhorn program for family groups only, and assistant site manager Eric Abercrombie is conducting limited guided tours,” Baird said.

He explained park visitors need to call and check availability first with all activities.

The state historic site is located at 170 N. U.S. Hwy. 283, just over 14 miles north of Albany.
